Truck Safety 2026 – 4 stars CitySafe
Verdict:
The Volvo FL is offered in configurations for use in City Distribution, gaining 4-stars and CitySafe award. The Direct vision is good, supported by optional fitment of a Lower Door Vision Window to improve visibility of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) such as cyclist and pedestrians. Visibility is further enhanced by an optional camera system providing an extended 360 view around the vehicle, as well as a separate view of the nearside when turning, enhancing visibility of close-proximity hazards. The AEB systems were good in preventing collisions in truck to vehicle scenarios, both with and without ACC. The system was also good at preventing frontal collisions with vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians, commonly encountered in urban environments. The Volvo FL tested was equipped with a Cyclist Nearside Turn Across Path Protection System, the performance was marginal. The system also required activation of the vehicle’s indicator for operation which is another limitation of the system compared to higher performing systems. No Lane Keep Assist was available on the vehicle. The coverage of safety equipment and performance of those systems mean the Volvo FL is a good option for operators in city environments, providing the rated optional safety equipment is selected.
